FLORIDA GATORS FANS SPLIT AFTER DAN MULLEN’S UNLV DEBUT ENDS IN MEMPHIS LOSS

Former Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen opened his second season at UNLV with a frustrating 27-21 loss to Memphis, and the result quickly reignited an old debate among Florida fans. For Florida fans, though, the game was about more than the UNLV result.

Former Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen opened his second season at UNLV with a frustrating 27-21 loss to Memphis, and the result quickly reignited an old debate among Florida fans.

UNLV held a 21-14 lead in the second half at Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night. Memphis then scored the final 13 points to complete the comeback and hand the Rebels a season-opening defeat.

For Florida fans, though, the game was about more than the UNLV result.

Mullen remains one of the more divisive figures in recent Florida football history. Some supporters remember the success he produced in Gainesville. Others remain critical of how his tenure unraveled.

Saturday’s loss brought both sides of that argument back into the spotlight.

Mullen’s loss immediately sparked criticism from Gators fans

The reaction on social media was sharp.

Several Florida fans focused on the fact that Mullen’s team surrendered a seven-point second-half advantage. One fan questioned how a coach often praised for his offensive and strategic ability could lose a home game after holding a lead against Memphis.

Another reaction revisited Mullen’s departure from Florida, arguing that his UNLV struggles supported the view that he had been overrated.

The criticism became even more pointed from some Florida-oriented accounts.

One fan mocked Mullen for spending the offseason talking about reaching the 12-team College Football Playoff before opening the season with a loss to Memphis.

Those reactions are hardly surprising.

Mullen’s time at Florida produced enough success to create lasting expectations, but his final season left many supporters frustrated. That combination has made his post-Gainesville career particularly interesting to the fan base.

There is still plenty of respect for what Mullen accomplished at Florida

Not every Gators fan was celebrating the UNLV defeat.

Some supporters pushed back against the criticism and argued that Mullen deserves more credit for what he accomplished in Gainesville.

One Florida-focused account acknowledged that Mullen eventually needed to leave the program but stressed that he remains a two-time national champion with the Gators and did significant positive work during his tenure.

Another fan argued that the hostility toward Mullen has become disproportionate, particularly when compared with how some supporters viewed other recent Florida coaching situations.

That side of the debate has a legitimate foundation.

Mullen went 34-15 during his four seasons at Florida. The Gators won the Peach Bowl and Orange Bowl during his first two seasons, giving the program major bowl victories and a clear presence on the national stage.

The story changed later.

Florida lost the Cotton Bowl during Mullen’s third season and failed to make a bowl during his final season. The program’s decline eventually overshadowed much of the early success.

That is why his legacy remains complicated.

There is enough evidence for supporters to defend his tenure. There is also enough disappointment for critics to remain skeptical.

UNLV’s inability to close the game is the bigger concern

From a football perspective, the most important takeaway from Saturday night may not be the final score itself.

It was the way UNLV lost control after taking a 21-14 lead.

Memphis responded with 13 unanswered points and never gave the Rebels another opportunity to regain the advantage.

One game does not establish a long-term trend. It would be premature to make sweeping conclusions about Mullen’s second season based solely on the opener.

But the collapse does raise an obvious question.

Can UNLV consistently finish games when it has control?

That is where Mullen’s experience becomes particularly relevant. The former Florida coach entered his second season at UNLV with expectations surrounding the program, and an early loss puts additional importance on how the Rebels respond.

The best response would be immediate.

A strong performance in the next game could quickly push Saturday’s disappointment into the background. Another loss, especially if UNLV repeats the same late-game problems, would give critics considerably more ammunition.

The Florida connection makes every Mullen result worth watching

Mullen’s UNLV tenure will likely continue to attract attention from Florida supporters because of his history in Gainesville.

His 34-15 record is an important part of the discussion. So are the major bowl wins and the fact that Florida reached a level of national relevance during the early portion of his tenure.

At the same time, the program’s late decline cannot simply be ignored.

That creates a strange dynamic whenever Mullen loses.

Some Gators fans see another reason to criticize the former coach. Others see an opportunity to defend a coach they believe delivered meaningful success before his tenure ran out of momentum.

Saturday’s Memphis loss did not resolve that debate.

It intensified it.

For Mullen, the more immediate concern is UNLV. The Rebels now have to move forward from an 0-1 start and prepare for their next opportunity against Hawaii on Sept. 5.

For Florida fans, the story is different.

They will continue watching Mullen because his legacy is still connected to the program. Every win can strengthen the argument that he remains a capable coach. Every disappointing loss gives his critics another reason to question his reputation.

That makes the next few weeks more revealing than one opening-night result.

Mullen does not need to prove his entire Florida career in Las Vegas. But he does need to show that UNLV can turn its talent and expectations into consistent results.

The Memphis game exposed a problem with finishing.

The response will tell us much more.

For now, the former Gators coach begins his second UNLV season at 0-1, while Florida fans remain divided over what Dan Mullen’s UNLV loss to Memphis actually means.
