FLORIDA FOOTBALL VS FAU 2026 GAME PREVIEW AND LIVE UPDATES

The wait is over in Gainesville.

Florida football opens the 2026 season Saturday night against Florida Atlantic, with a new head coach, a new offensive coordinator and a new starting quarterback taking center stage at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET.

More importantly, it marks the first game of the Jon Sumrall era at Florida.

The Gators enter as heavy favorites, but Sumrall and his staff have made it clear that FAU cannot be treated like a routine season opener.

The Owls bring an experienced quarterback in Caden Veltkamp and an offense capable of creating problems through the air.

That gives Florida an early test on both sides of the ball.

Florida football vs FAU 2026 game preview: Jon Sumrall era begins

Sumrall’s first official game as Florida’s head coach comes against an FAU team that Florida faced last season.

The talent gap favors the Gators.

Still, Florida’s new coaching staff has spent the week emphasizing preparation rather than expectations.

This is also the first opportunity to see Sumrall’s vision translated onto the field.

Buster Faulkner’s offense will make its debut, while defensive coordinator Brad White will unveil Florida’s 3-4 scheme in a regular-season game.

There will be plenty of attention on the scoreboard.

But the bigger story may be how Florida looks under its new leadership.

Florida football vs FAU 2026 game preview: Aaron Philo gets the start

Aaron Philo won Florida’s quarterback competition and will take the first snap of the season.

He beat out Tramell Jones Jr. for the starting job.

Now the competition gives way to production.

Philo enters his first start at Florida with an impressive collection of weapons around him.

The Gators will look to establish a rhythm early and take advantage of the experience surrounding their new quarterback.

Running back Jadan Baugh is expected to play a major role.

Florida also has three talented receivers capable of changing the game quickly.

Those receivers are Vernell Brown III, Eric Singleton Jr. and Dallas Wilson.

For Philo, the objective is simple: operate the offense, protect the football and let the playmakers work.

Florida football vs FAU 2026 matchup: Gators offense to watch

Faulkner’s offense gets its first real test Saturday night.

The offensive coordinator has brought a versatile approach to Gainesville, and FAU will provide the first look at how Florida executes it in a live game.

Baugh gives the Gators a physical option in the backfield.

The receiving corps gives Philo several ways to attack.

Brown, Singleton and Wilson can stretch the field and create opportunities underneath.

That combination could make Florida difficult to defend if the offensive line gives Philo enough time.

The biggest question is how quickly the new system settles in.

Opening-night mistakes are inevitable.

Florida’s ability to limit them could determine how quickly it pulls away.

Florida football vs FAU 2026 matchup: Brad White’s defense faces a test

Florida’s defense has a different challenge.

White’s 3-4 scheme will face an FAU offense that likes to throw the football.

That puts immediate pressure on Florida’s pass rush and coverage units.

Veltkamp brings veteran experience to the Owls’ offense.

Florida cannot afford to give him comfortable throwing lanes.

The Gators will need disciplined communication in the secondary and consistent pressure up front.

If Florida controls the line of scrimmage, the matchup could look very different.

If FAU consistently moves the chains through the air, the game could remain competitive longer than the betting line suggests.
