DJ Lagway enters the 2026 season with something he rarely had at Florida: a completely fresh start.
The former Florida quarterback is now at Baylor, where he has the opportunity to build an offense around his strengths and establish himself without the baggage of his previous chapter.
That makes Lagway one of the most intriguing former Gators to watch this season.
His Florida career produced flashes of elite potential. It also produced enough inconsistency to leave a much bigger question unanswered.
What would Lagway look like if everything around him clicked?
Baylor could provide the first real answer.
Lagway left Florida with unfinished business
Lagway’s final performance in Gainesville showed why his talent remained so intriguing.
He completed 15 of 24 passes for 168 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Florida’s 40-21 victory over Florida State.
It was an efficient way to close his Florida tenure.
But his overall 2025 numbers were more complicated.
Lagway completed 213 of 337 passes for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His 63.2 percent completion rate showed some efficiency, but the 14 interceptions highlighted the consistency issues that prevented his talent from translating into sustained production.
That combination defined much of his Florida experience.
There were throws that reminded everyone why he was so highly regarded.
There were also stretches when turnovers and inconsistency limited his effectiveness.
Baylor now gets the opportunity to develop the first version of Lagway that exists without the Florida chapter hanging over him.
The physical profile gives Baylor plenty to build around
The foundation is obvious.
Lagway brings a strong arm, legitimate mobility and a powerful physical presence to the quarterback position.
At roughly 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, he has the size to operate from the pocket while still possessing the athleticism to create when a play breaks down.
That combination creates problems for defenses.
A defense cannot simply focus on taking away his deep passing game. Lagway can threaten with his legs, extend plays and create opportunities outside the original design of a play.
The challenge is making those abilities work together consistently.
His next developmental step is not about proving that he can make spectacular plays.
Everyone already knows he can.
The bigger challenge is becoming dependable on ordinary downs.
That means making accurate throws, getting through progressions, avoiding unnecessary risks and protecting the football.
If Lagway improves in those areas, the talent becomes much easier to translate into production.
Baylor gives Lagway a different environment
The change in surroundings could be just as important as the change in uniform.
Lagway arrives at Baylor under head coach Dave Aranda, whose approach places significant emphasis on team unity and the person behind the player.
For a quarterback attempting to reset his career, that type of environment could matter.
Lagway appeared relaxed and confident during Big 12 Media Days.
His demeanor was noticeably positive as he discussed his new program and prepared for the season.
That does not guarantee success.
But confidence can be important for a young quarterback.
A player who trusts his coaches, teammates and surroundings can play faster. He can make decisions without constantly worrying about the previous mistake.
That is potentially one of the biggest advantages of Lagway’s move.
He gets to start again.
The Auburn opener could provide an early answer
Baylor’s opening game against Auburn will immediately give Lagway an opportunity to make an impression.
The matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta represents more than the beginning of a new season.
It is the first major test of whether Lagway’s transition to Baylor is translating onto the field.
A strong performance would not erase his Florida statistics.
It would, however, provide evidence that the new environment is helping him turn potential into production.
For Baylor, the priority should be getting Lagway comfortable early.
That could mean creating manageable throws, allowing him to use his mobility and giving him opportunities to attack defenses without forcing him into unnecessary high-risk situations.
The goal should be rhythm.
Once a quarterback establishes rhythm, the rest of the offense becomes easier to operate.
The turnover question remains critical
If Lagway is going to have a breakout season, his interception numbers will deserve close attention.
The 14 interceptions from his 2025 Florida season are impossible to ignore.
Aggressiveness is part of what makes Lagway dangerous, but there is a difference between attacking a defense and giving the defense opportunities.
Baylor needs the aggressive version of Lagway without the unnecessary mistakes.
That could be the central development point of his season.
If he can maintain his willingness to attack while becoming more selective with risky throws, his efficiency should improve.
That would also allow Baylor to take greater advantage of his physical gifts.
The best version of Lagway does not need to make every play spectacular.
He needs to make the correct play consistently.
A breakout season would change the conversation
Lagway enters Baylor with legitimate NFL intrigue because of his physical traits.
But a successful 2026 season would require more than impressive throws.
Scouts will want to see how he handles pressure, reads defenses, manages games and responds after mistakes.
Those qualities separate talented quarterbacks from reliable ones.
For Lagway, the opportunity is significant.
A productive season could transform the conversation surrounding his career.
Instead of focusing primarily on what did not happen at Florida, evaluators could begin discussing what Lagway is becoming at Baylor.
That distinction matters.
His Florida chapter will always be part of his story.
It does not have to define the story.
Florida fans have a reason to keep watching
The Gators will have plenty of reasons to focus on their own quarterback situation and Jon Sumrall’s program in 2026.
Still, Lagway’s progress will naturally attract attention around Gainesville.
Florida fans saw enough of his ability to understand why his future remains fascinating.
They saw the arm.
They saw the athleticism.
They saw the flashes.
What they did not consistently see was the complete version of the quarterback those flashes suggested he could become.
Baylor now has the chance to find that player.
The key will not be whether Lagway can produce one spectacular afternoon.
It will be whether he can string together strong performances throughout an entire season.
That is the difference between potential and production.
For Lagway, 2026 represents an opportunity to close that gap.
And for Florida Gators fans, his Baylor season could finally reveal what might have been possible if the pieces had come together in Gainesville.
DJ Lagway’s Baylor reset could reveal what the Florida Gators never got to see.
