Florida’s quarterback competition is over.

Head coach Jon Sumrall has handed the starting job to Aaron Philo, giving the Georgia Tech transfer the first opportunity to lead the Gators into the 2026 season.

Philo will take the first-team snaps when Florida opens against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5. The decision came after a spring-and-fall battle with redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr.

But this was not simply a decision based on arm strength or athletic ability.

Philo separated himself in an area that can be harder to measure: his ability to operate the offense.

That distinction offers an important clue into why Florida ultimately chose him.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN SHOWS A QB BUILT FOR THE SYSTEM

Philo entered Gainesville with a major advantage.

He already knew offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner.

Faulkner coached Philo at Georgia Tech before both made the move to Florida. Philo spent his first two seasons of college football with the Yellow Jackets, primarily working behind Haynes King.

That familiarity mattered.

Philo did not have to learn an entirely new offensive language from scratch. He already understood many of the concepts, terminology and expectations associated with Faulkner’s system.

That allowed Florida’s staff to evaluate something deeper than whether he could make a spectacular throw.

They could evaluate how quickly he could run the offense.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: OPERATIONAL SKILL WAS THE SEPARATOR

This is where the quarterback competition appears to have tilted toward Philo.

Sumrall indicated that Philo and Jones were relatively close in several physical categories.

Both quarterbacks could make plays with their arms.

Both could use their legs.

Neither was separated by an overwhelming athletic advantage.

So Florida needed another way to decide.

The answer was operational ability.

Philo showed a stronger command of the offense. That includes getting the team into the correct call, recognizing defensive looks, making adjustments and handling the details required before the snap.

Those things rarely generate highlight clips.

They can determine whether a drive succeeds.

A quarterback who understands what the defense is presenting before the snap can turn a difficult situation into an advantageous one.

Florida appears to believe Philo is further along in that process.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN REVEALS HIS POCKET AND DECISION-MAKING TRAITS

Florida also needed a quarterback it could trust with the football.

That became particularly important during fall camp.

Sumrall praised Philo for protecting the football and making good decisions during the team’s second scrimmage.

Philo also scored a rushing touchdown.

That combination is significant.

Florida does not need its quarterback to chase big plays on every possession.

It needs him to make the right decision repeatedly.

Take what the defense gives him.

Avoid unnecessary turnovers.

Keep the offense on schedule.

Then attack when an opportunity appears.

Philo’s performance in those areas helped strengthen his case.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: HIS MOBILITY ADDS ANOTHER DIMENSION

Philo’s value is not limited to what he can do from inside the pocket.

He has enough mobility to create problems when a passing play breaks down.

That gives Florida another way to attack defenses.

If edge rushers get too aggressive, Philo can escape.

If coverage forces him to hold the ball, he can create yards himself.

If defenders lose discipline, his legs can turn a broken play into a positive one.

That does not mean Florida will build its entire offense around quarterback runs.

It simply means defenses have another responsibility.

And every additional responsibility creates potential opportunities elsewhere.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD MATTERS

One part of Philo’s development deserves particular attention.

His ability to see and attack the middle of the field has emerged as an important element of his passing profile.

That can change how defenses play Florida.

The middle of the field is where linebackers and safeties have to make difficult decisions. A quarterback who consistently threatens that area can force defenders to hesitate.

That hesitation can create openings outside.

It can also open throwing lanes between levels of the defense.

For Florida’s offense, that could become especially important as the season progresses.

Philo will have to prove that he can make those throws consistently against live SEC competition.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: EXPERIENCE REMAINS THE BIG QUESTION

There is one obvious concern surrounding Philo.

He does not enter the season with extensive starting experience.

Philo played in eight games during his two seasons at Georgia Tech.

His first college start came last season against Gardner-Webb.

He completed 21 of 28 passes for 373 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

That performance demonstrated his ability to produce when given an extended opportunity.

But Florida’s schedule will present a completely different challenge.

SEC defenses will test his processing.

They will disguise coverages.

They will pressure him from different angles.

They will force him to make decisions quickly.

That is where Philo’s development will be measured.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: BUSTER FAULKNER COULD BE A MAJOR ADVANTAGE

The Philo-Faulkner connection could become one of Florida’s biggest offensive advantages.

They already know each other.

Faulkner understands Philo’s strengths and weaknesses.

Philo understands what Faulkner wants from the position.

That familiarity can accelerate development.

Instead of spending valuable practice time learning an entirely new system, Philo can focus on mastering the details.

The next challenge is developing chemistry with Florida’s receivers.

Quarterback knowledge only goes so far.

Timing has to become instinctive.

Receivers need to know where the ball is going.

Philo needs to know exactly when they will get there.

That relationship could determine how quickly Florida’s passing game develops.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: TRAMELL JONES JR. STILL MATTERS

Florida’s decision does not erase what Jones accomplished during the competition.

The redshirt freshman pushed Philo for the starting job throughout the process.

Sumrall praised Jones’ development and ability to make plays.

Jones also has some college experience.

He appeared in two games last season as DJ Lagway’s backup, completing 21 of 35 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.

For now, however, Philo has won the competition.

That does not necessarily mean Jones disappears from the picture.

Florida can continue developing him while allowing Philo to establish himself as the starter.

If the season produces unexpected circumstances, having a capable No. 2 could become extremely valuable.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: THE REAL TEST STARTS SEPTEMBER 5

Winning the quarterback competition is only the beginning.

Philo’s first real test will come when Florida opens the season against Florida Atlantic.

That game should provide the clearest early look at how his practice traits translate to live competition.

Can he operate the offense efficiently?

Can he make the correct reads?

Can he protect the football?

Can he attack downfield when opportunities appear?

And perhaps most importantly, can he remain composed when the defense starts creating problems?

Those answers will tell Florida much more than any preseason practice ever could.

AARON PHILO FLORIDA STARTING QUARTERBACK FILM BREAKDOWN: WHAT FLORIDA IS BETTING ON

Florida is betting on Philo’s ability to make the offense function.

The Gators are not simply choosing the quarterback with the biggest arm.

They are choosing the player they believe is most prepared to manage the entire operation.

His familiarity with Faulkner’s system helps.

His mobility helps.

His passing ability helps.

But the biggest factor appears to be his command of the offense.

That will now have to translate from practice to Saturdays.

If it does, Florida could have found a quarterback capable of giving the offense stability while still providing explosive-play potential.

If it does not, the pressure will increase quickly.

For now, though, the job belongs to Philo.
