Vernell Brown III Injury Status Puts Florida’s Punt Return Job in Play at Missouri

Florida’s first availability report for Missouri lists Vernell Brown III as questionable, and the problem may reach beyond receiver depth. If Brown and Bailey Stockton both sit Saturday, the Gators could be down to a freshman who has already muffed a punt this season.

What the report says

Brown and Stockton are both questionable. Brown left the Ole Miss game with a right knee strain. Stockton is mainly rehabbing his back after the hit that drew a targeting call in the same game.

Eric Singleton Jr. is not on the report. That is encouraging, but it only tells us he isn’t listed.

Sumrall’s read on Brown

Sumrall described the news on Brown as good by injury standards earlier this week. The MRI showed nothing long-term, he said. What remains is pain tolerance and Brown’s confidence that he is ready to go.

That is a different kind of uncertainty than a structural injury. Brown’s availability may come down to how he moves in the final days of practice, and the questionable tag leaves room for either outcome.

A receiver room that hasn’t been whole

The preseason hope was a receiver trio of Brown, Dallas Wilson, and Singleton. That group lasted one drive. Singleton was rolled up on in the opener against FAU, and he played against Ole Miss out of necessity after Brown had to exit.

Missouri could be another game where Florida doesn’t have all three on the field at once.

Who replaces Brown’s snaps

If Brown can’t go, TJ Abrams and Kahleil Jackson are the likely candidates to absorb the bulk of his work. Stockton would also see snaps if he plays, though he has mostly been used in the slot to fill in for Singleton.

That detail matters. Stockton covers for Singleton inside, so Florida’s slot depth is a real consideration if he is limited.

The punt return problem

Brown’s injury also threatens the return game. Stockton came back from his hit against Ole Miss and later returned a punt for 16 yards. If he is out, the next option on paper is freshman Justin Williams, who muffed a punt against Campbell.

On the road in the SEC, a fumbled punt can swing field position and momentum. The staff may have to weigh a freshman’s upside against the cost of a turnover in a tight game.

Missouri has its own injury problem

Florida isn’t the only team dealing with availability issues. Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy is listed as out. He is still recovering from a gunshot wound suffered in the offseason. At SEC Media Days, Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz hinted there was a pathway for Hardy to be ready by this point in the season, but there have been setbacks.

As a whole, Florida is in much better shape than Missouri on the injury front.

What to watch Saturday

The key question is whether Brown’s knee passes the test of pain tolerance and confidence. The punt return decision follows from his status and Stockton’s.

If Brown plays, Florida avoids most of the problem. If he doesn’t, the Vernell Brown III injury status becomes a story about more than one receiver slot.
