Thierry Henry believes Bruno Fernandes deserves the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award over Declan Rice, arguing that individual influence—not Premier League success—should determine the winner.

The former Arsenal striker made the case during a discussion with Jamie Carragher, insisting that the prestigious award should recognize the player who made the biggest difference to his team.

Henry: The Award Is About Impact

Henry acknowledged that both Fernandes and Rice enjoyed outstanding campaigns, but he believes their influence on their respective teams was different.

“Guys, listen, this is an important award, but I think we sometimes get confused about what we’re actually voting for,” Henry said.

For him, the PFA award has never simply been a contest between the Premier League champion and the league’s top scorer. Instead, it should identify the footballer whose presence had the greatest individual impact.

Henry used Arsenal and Manchester United to illustrate his argument.

He suggested that Arsenal would still possess enough attacking quality to score goals and win games without Rice. Manchester United, however, would lose a much greater portion of their creative identity without Fernandes.

“Now take Bruno out of Manchester United and watch what happens,” Henry argued. “Who creates? Who progresses the ball? Who takes responsibility? Who gives them that final pass?”

That, according to Henry, is what separates Fernandes from the competition.

“Bruno Fernandes. That’s My Vote.”

When Carragher asked Henry directly who would receive his vote, there was no hesitation.

“Bruno Fernandes.”

Henry pointed to Fernandes’ versatility and creative output as key reasons for his decision. The Portuguese midfielder spent a significant portion of the season playing away from his preferred No. 10 position, yet still managed to produce at an elite level.

Then, after moving back into the No. 10 role, Henry highlighted the midfielder’s remarkable creative numbers, including 21 assists.

“That’s not just statistics,” Henry said. “That’s influence. That’s a player creating opportunities for everyone around him.”

For Henry, those numbers tell only part of the story. Fernandes’ importance goes beyond goals and assists because he constantly demanded the ball, attempted to move Manchester United forward and accepted responsibility when the team needed someone to make something happen.

Rice Has the Premier League Medal—But Does That Decide It?

One of the strongest points in Henry’s argument was his rejection of the idea that winning the Premier League should automatically strengthen a player’s PFA case.

Rice’s contribution to Arsenal’s title-winning campaign is undeniable, but Henry believes the award is an individual honor and should therefore be judged primarily on individual performance.

“And people keep saying, ‘But Declan Rice won the Premier League.’ Okay, but since when has winning the league been a requirement for the PFA award?” Henry asked.

He then pointed to previous winners who claimed the prize without being Premier League champions in the same season.

Steven Gerrard, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Gareth Bale, Robin van Persie, Luis Suárez, Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne all provide examples of players who won the individual honor despite not lifting the league trophy that campaign.

Henry’s message was clear: the criteria should not suddenly change because Fernandes is competing against a player from the champions.

Fernandes’ Influence Is the Deciding Factor

The debate ultimately comes down to what voters value most.

Rice brings control, defensive intelligence, physical strength and the ability to influence matches from midfield. His role in Arsenal’s title challenge made him one of the Premier League’s most important players.

Fernandes, meanwhile, operates with a different kind of responsibility. He is expected to create, dictate attacks, find the decisive pass and shoulder the creative burden for Manchester United.

That burden is precisely what Henry believes should carry the most weight.

“Bruno doesn’t deserve this award because he plays for Manchester United,” Henry said. “He deserves it because he set the standard for what a playmaker should produce.”

It is a powerful distinction. Henry is not dismissing Rice’s achievements or suggesting the Arsenal midfielder is undeserving of recognition. Quite the opposite: he described Rice as an “exceptional footballer” who will continue to develop.

But when forced to choose one player based purely on individual influence, Henry believes Fernandes stands above the rest.

Henry’s Final Verdict

The PFA Players’ Player of the Year award is voted on by fellow professionals, making it one of the most respected individual honors in English soccer.

That makes Henry’s argument particularly interesting. His choice is not based on medals, team success or reputation alone. He believes the central question should be simple: Which player would his team miss the most?

For Henry, the answer is Bruno Fernandes.

Rice may have the Premier League medal, but Henry believes Fernandes carried a heavier creative responsibility and produced the greater individual impact. In a season where the two midfielders made compelling cases in very different ways, the former Arsenal star has made his position unmistakable.

Bruno Fernandes is Thierry Henry’s pick for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award because, in Henry’s view, individual impact matters more than the Premier League medal.
