South Carolina has its first commitment of the 2027 recruiting class.
And it is a particularly important one.
Taylor Brown, the No. 30 overall player and No. 5 point guard in ESPN’s 2027 SC Next 100, has committed to Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks.
Brown chose South Carolina over Tennessee and North Carolina, ending a recruitment that had quickly become one of the more closely watched point-guard battles in the class.
The 5-foot-6 guard from Long Island Lutheran in New York took her official visit to Columbia in September.
That visit appears to have made a strong impression.
Brown also had Staley, Lisa Boyer and Jolette Law visit her in New York on Sept. 30, just days before her commitment.
But this commitment is about more than simply adding another highly ranked recruit.
South Carolina has been looking for a true point guard.
The Gamecocks have acknowledged that the 2026-27 roster does not have a traditional floor general, which has led to a point-guard-by-committee approach involving players such as Tessa Johnson, Agot Makeer, Brooke Quarles Daniels and Jerzy Robinson.
Brown gives Staley something different for the future.
A natural point guard who can bring the ball up, attack pressure, create for teammates and score herself.
ESPN describes Brown as a guard capable of playing in transition, handling pressure and playing alongside elite talent.
She also brings legitimate perimeter shooting.
Before suffering a knee injury in February, Brown had developed into a reliable 3-point shooter while continuing to grow into the role of a traditional lead guard.
Last summer with Exodus NYC on the Nike EYBL circuit, she averaged 12.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
Her defensive identity could be just as important.
Brown has described defense as an area where she believes she can separate herself, and she has embraced the nickname “The Glove,” a reference to Hall of Fame defender Gary Payton.
There is also an interesting personal connection.
Brown is from Philadelphia, the same city where Staley was born and raised.
And Brown’s own explanation for choosing South Carolina went beyond basketball.
She cited the roster, culture, campus, facilities, recovery resources and her comfort with the coaching staff, particularly significant given her current rehabilitation from an ACL injury.
That recovery will be something to monitor.
Brown has not played this season because of the knee injury, according to recent recruiting reports.
But her long-term fit in Columbia could be extremely significant.
When Brown arrives for the 2027-28 season, ESPN notes that she could be the only traditional point guard on the South Carolina roster.
That potentially gives her an immediate opportunity to compete for meaningful minutes.
And look at the bigger picture.
South Carolina already has a nationally ranked 2026 recruiting class coming in, headlined by five-star Jerzy Robinson alongside Oliviyah Edwards, Kaeli Wynn, Kelsi Andrews and Justin Loubens.
Now Brown becomes the first piece of the 2027 class.
And Staley is not finished recruiting that class.
South Carolina remains involved with highly ranked prospects including Jezelle “GG” Banks and Jordyn Palmer, while five-star center Zaniya Johnson recently visited Columbia as well.
So this could be only the beginning.
For now, though, the headline is simple.
Dawn Staley wanted a true point guard for the future.
She just got one.
Taylor Brown is coming to South Carolina.
And the Gamecocks’ next era at the point may already have its starting name.
