Philo’s Processing Is Broken – Jones Gives Florida a Functional RPO Threat

The Tape & Scheme Analysis

The first interception tells the story.

Philo stared down the boundary. He threw late over the middle. That is a cardinal sin versus Kirby’s pattern-match Cover 3.

Georgia baited him. They showed two-high. They rotated post-snap. Philo never saw the robber.

That is not arm talent. That is processing speed. And it is too slow right now.

The second INT was fluky. Eric Singleton Jr. has to catch that dig. But the damage was done. 5-of-7 for 26 yards. Two turnovers. Zero explosive plays.

Sumrall pulled the plug. Right call.

Tramell Jones Jr. changed the math. He went 18-of-25 for 172 and a score. He added 17 rushing yards and a TD. The stat line is not elite. The tape is better.

Jones operates quicker. His drop is decisive. He gets to his third step and throws. He does not drift.

Florida’s protection has been leaky. Missouri and South Carolina both won with simulated pressures. Philo holds the ball. Jones solves pressure with his legs.

That unlocks the offense. With Philo, Florida lives in 11 personnel gun with half-slide protection. The back has to check the B-gap. It limits route distribution.

With Jones, you can run true RPO and inverted veer. You can run Bash Counter and read the backside end. You force the boundary safety to fit the run.

That opens the glance and the slot fade. Jones hit that twice in the second half. He also kept the sticks alive on 3rd-and-6 with a designed QB draw versus man-free.

He is not a vertical passer yet. Arm strength is average. He misses outside the numbers. But he has pocket presence. He climbs. He does not bail.

Philo bails. That kills timing in the quick game. Sumrall wants 5-7 yard efficiency. Jones gives you that. Philo gives you negative plays.

The call for Oklahoma is simple. Start Jones. Build the plan around 12 personnel, duo, and play-action boot. Force Oklahoma to defend 11 gaps, not 10.

Recruiting & Roster Depth Context

This room was built for 2027, not 2026.

Philo was a high 3-star developmental take. Good touch. Limited creator traits. He was supposed to sit behind DJ Lagway.

Jones was the higher upside swing. Composite 4-star. Ranked as a top-15 QB in his cycle. Elite camp numbers. Live arm plus 4.6 speed.

Lagway’s transfer portal exit blew up the timeline. It forced both freshmen into SEC fire early.

That is why portal talk is real. Sumrall said it himself. They need a take.

But do not misread this. Jones has starting traits. His high school film showed advanced RPO processing. He threw for over 3,200 yards as a senior. He did it in a spread system that translates.

Florida’s 2026 class currently has no QB committed. The staff chased two 5-stars. Both trended to Texas and Oregon. The focus shifted to a portal veteran with two years left.

That plan still makes sense. Jones is a quality QB2 or bridge QB1. Philo looks like a transfer candidate if he does not start.

The receiver room complicates it. Vernell Brown III and Singleton are vertical threats. They need a thrower who pushes the ball beyond 20 yards. Neither current QB does that consistently.

Sumrall will have to recruit to the QB, not the other way around. If Jones is the guy, add a big-slot YAC player and a move TE. Not another contested-catch X.

The SEC Outlook

Florida is done for the playoff. At 5-3 overall, 27-8 loss to Georgia ends it.

The goal is now 8-4. Get to a decent bowl. Build momentum for 2027.

Oklahoma is winnable. Their defense struggles versus mobile QBs. Jones gives Florida its best chance. If they protect him, they can steal it in Gainesville.

Ole Miss and Tennessee are problems. Both have edge rushers who win in 2.5 seconds. That exposes Jones’ arm limitations.

Project it honestly. Florida beats Oklahoma and Florida State. Loses to Ole Miss and at LSU.

That is 7-5, 4-4 SEC. Not good enough for Atlanta. Good enough to sell the portal plan.

Start Jones. Live with the growing pains. His legs raise the floor. Philo lowers it.
