The Tape & Scheme Analysis

Jon Sumrall was right to be pissed.

The 52-3 final over Campbell lies. The tape does not. Florida sleepwalked after halftime. That won’t survive Jordan-Hare.

Sumrall said it plain. “We will get absolutely embarrassed if we don’t improve.” He is talking about maturity. He is talking about eye discipline. Campbell exposed both.

Let’s start with run defense. 62 yards allowed looks elite. It wasn’t. Campbell ran Duo at Florida’s 3-technique. Linebackers overran their fits. Safeties triggered late from single-high Cover 3. That is a gap integrity issue.

Auburn will punish it. Byrum Brown is not a Campbell quarterback. He beat Florida in The Swamp last year at USF. He is a true dual-threat. 34 carries for 115 yards already. One rushing score. He wants power-read and counter bash.

Florida cannot live in base 3-3-5 stack. They need a 4-2-5 front with a 5-man box. Set the edge with the field JACK. Play spill technique. Force Brown to cut back into pursuit.

Coverage has to change too. Against Campbell, Florida bailed into Cover 3. Corners gave free access. Brown will take those throws all night. He already has 3 INTs on vertical shots. He is better underneath.

The answer is quarters. Play Cover 4. Keep eyes on the quarterback. Read number two to number one. Use your WILL linebacker as a spy. Force Brown to win from the pocket.

Offensively, protection is the story. Aaron Philo has been clean. Campbell and LIU didn’t blitz. Auburn will. Alex Golesh brings simulated pressure. He did it last season at USF. He will test Florida’s interior.

Florida has been sliding protection to the field. That leaves the boundary A-gap open. That is where Brown’s old defense attacked Philo. It is a weakness on tape.

Jadan Baugh has to fix it. He is more than a big-play runner now. He must be a six-man protector. On third-and-5 plus, keep him in. Chip the edge rusher. Philo needs a clean launch point.

Vernell Brown III’s 3-TD game matters schematically. He won on option routes from the slot. Campbell played off-man. Auburn plays press-quarters. He will get pressed.

Use motion to help him. Jet motion to free access. Bunch sets to create rubs. That is how you get a 5-10 slot open against SEC corners.

Recruiting & Roster Depth Context

This game is a recruiting referendum for Sumrall.

He is building different than Billy Napier. Less portal volume. More high school trench talent. That philosophy shows up this week.

Vernell Brown III is the example. Four-star legacy from Orlando Jones. Top 100 player in 2024. Florida beat Ohio State for him. He was recruited as a vertical slot with elite twitch. He whiffed on contested catches as a freshman. Now he is winning at the top of routes. That development is critical. Florida missed on outside X receivers in the last two cycles.

Eric Singleton Jr. is the portal counterpoint. Former four-star from Georgia. Transferred from Georgia Tech. 4.32 verified speed. He was brought in to be the Z vertical threat. If he is out, Florida loses its only field stretcher. Defenses will compress. That kills Baugh’s explosive run rate. Eugene Wilson III would have to play Z. He is a slot at heart.

On defense, Emmanuel Oyebadejo is a name to know. True freshman from Texas. Four-star interior player. 6-4, 280 pounds. Elite first-step quickness. He was slated for 15-20 snaps as a pass-rush 3-tech. Sumrall lists him as questionable.

If he sits, depth collapses. Behind Caleb Banks, Florida has only two-gappers. No penetration. That forces more 0-tech nose fronts. That is bad against a quarterback run game. You need penetration to blow up pullers.

This is also Golesh versus Sumrall for Central Florida. Both recruited Tampa and Orlando hard as Group of Five coaches. A road win at Auburn legitimizes Sumrall’s culture pitch. A loss gives Golesh tape to show recruits. He already beat Florida once.

The Projected Depth Chart Impact

Injuries plus scheme change how snaps get divided. Here is the projected layout for 7 p.m. ESPN at Jordan-Hare.

The SEC Outlook

This line says it all. Florida -2.5 at Jordan-Hare. Over/Under 52.5. Vegas respects the roster. It questions the maturity.

This is a season-swing game. Win and you are 3-0. You have a road SEC win. You have proof you can stop a mobile quarterback. That matters with LaNorris Sellers and Arch Manning on deck.

Lose and you are 2-1 with a pattern. Slow starts. Sloppy second halves. A team not ready for SEC trenches. That leads to 6-6.

My scout prediction stays. Florida 27, Auburn 21. But it won’t be pretty. Florida must win on third down. Win with quarters coverage. Win with six-man protection.

Baugh grinds for 120 yards. Brown wins again from the slot. Florida’s edge players set a hard edge. They hold Byrum Brown under 60 rushing yards. That is the key number.

If they do that, Sumrall gets his culture win. If not, Auburn makes it two straight over Florida and the Campbell tape was a warning.
