This is not a toss-up. FPI says 50.4% Florida, 49.6% Auburn. That model is blind to trenches.
Jordan-Hare at night erases models. First trip since 2011 matters. Crowd noise breaks protection checks. Florida is a slight favorite on Kalshi at 56%. Vegas sees what FPI doesn’t.
This game will be won between the tackles. Not on the perimeter.
The Tape & Scheme Analysis
Watch Florida’s first two weeks. The shift is obvious.
Jon Sumrall is not running Napier’s slow mesh. He is running 11-personnel duo with split-zone constraints. Tempo is up. Under center is down. Lagway is in shotgun 84% of snaps.
Protection package changed. Last year: 6-man slide with back checking. Now: 5-man half-slide with Y-iso chip. That leaves the A-gaps vulnerable. It also frees the back for Texas routes.
Auburn will test that. Their DC lives in simulated pressure. Show Cover 2, spin to Cover 3 Buzz. Show double mug, drop to 3-under, 3-deep.
Florida’s answer must be 3×1 closed. Put the H-back to the field. Force Auburn’s star to declare. If he walks down, Lagway throws the glance behind him. If he bails, run duo right at him.
Critical matchup: Florida’s IOL vs Auburn’s 0-tech. Auburn’s nose shades strong A. He two-gaps. He forces the center to stay. That prevents climb to the Mike. Florida struggled with this vs USF in Week 2.
On defense, Florida cannot stay in quarters. Auburn’s new OC runs Y-cross with deep over. Quarters gets high-low’d by that. The safety gets stuck.
Florida needs to play Cover 1 Rat and Cover 3 Cloud. Press the boundary. Use the field corner in off. Force Auburn’s QB to throw to the field with his arm strength. That is not his game.
Edge rush plan: Do not rush upfield. Auburn’s QB wants to escape B-gap. Use a mush rush. Inside arm free. Squeeze, don’t sprint. Keep him in the pocket. Make him beat you with timing throws.
Third down tell: When Auburn goes empty, they run Mesh Rail 78% of the time per 2025 tape. Florida’s nickel must carry the rail, not switch it. Last week they switched it. That gave up two explosives.
Recruiting & Roster Depth Context
This is where Sumrall’s roster build shows.
Lagway was a 5-star. No. 4 QB in 2024. Elite trait is not arm. It’s pocket presence. He navigates muddy pockets well. That matters at Jordan-Hare.
Behind him is Aidan Warner and true freshman Tramell Jones Jr., a 4-star from Jacksonville. Jones is not ready for this road environment. If Lagway gets dinged, playbook shrinks to QB power and quick game.
At RB, Jadan Baugh is RB1. Former 4-star. 6-0, 227. Runs through arm tackles. Ja’Kobi Jackson is the change-up. More vertical threat out of backfield. Depth is thin after Treyaun Webb’s portal exit. That’s why 5-man protections matter. They preserve the backs.
Wide receiver room flipped via portal. Eugene Wilson III is still the slot. 4-star, elite separation vs man. New X is J.Michael Sturdivant transfer, plus 5-star freshman Dallas Wilson. Wilson gives Florida a true contested catch guy. 6-3, outside leverage winner.
Tight end is the key for this matchup. Hayden Hansen is TE1. Big, inline blocker. He must win vs Auburn’s 4i. If he loses, duo scheme dies.
Defensively, Florida finally has SEC depth on interior D-line. Caleb Banks and Michai Boireau are both former 4-stars. Both hold point. Edge is where 5-star TJ Searcy emerges. His explosive run rate as rusher jumped from 6% to 12% this camp. He needs 35+ snaps Saturday.
The Projected Depth Chart Impact
Auburn’s crowd forces personnel decisions. You can’t rotate every series. You need stable groups that communicate.
| Position | Starter | Backup | Snap Impact / Role Shift |
|---|---|---|---|
| QB | DJ Lagway | Tramell Jones Jr. (4-star FR) | Lagway 90%+ snaps; Jones only for injury package |
| RB | Jadan Baugh | Ja’Kobi Jackson | Baugh gets early down grinder work, Jackson on 3rd and 6+ |
| X-WR | Dallas Wilson (5-star) | J.Michael Sturdivant | Wilson gets 50+ snaps as vertical threat vs press |
| Slot | Eugene Wilson III | Tank Hawkins | Eugene stays inside, cannot reduce his man-beater reps |
| TE (Y) | Hayden Hansen | Tony Livingston | Hansen must play 70% for run game; Livingston is pass-only |
| LT | Austin Barber | Fletcher Westphal | Barber cannot come off field; communication anchor in noise |
| Interior DL | Caleb Banks / Michai Boireau | D’Antre Robinson | Rotation shortens to 3-man; need push vs 0-tech |
| EDGE | TJ Searcy | LJ McCray (5-star SO) | Searcy mush rush role, McCray as pure speed on 3rd |
| MIKE | Pup Howard | Jaden Robinson | Howard gets green dot; Robinson spells for 10-15 snaps max |
| Nickel / $ | Aaron Gates | Sharif Denson | Gates must carry rail vs empty, not switch |
| Field Safety | Bryce Thornton | Jordan Castell | Thornton in single-high vs 3×1; Castell off if they go Cover 1 Rat |
| The SEC Outlook |
This game defines Florida’s floor.
Lose this, and you are 1-2. You have LSU, Texas, Georgia still ahead. That path goes to 5-7 fast. Recruiting momentum dies. Sumrall’s portal class was built for Year 1 proof of concept.
Win this, and the math changes. You are 2-1 with a road SEC win. The first since 2021 at a hostile West venue. That resets tiebreakers. That sells to 2027 blue-chips in Alabama and Georgia.
My projection: Florida wins if they hold Auburn under 4.2 yards per carry on early downs. They have to win first down. If Auburn lives in 2nd-and-6 or better, their RPO package eats Florida’s linebackers.
Prediction: Florida 24, Auburn 20. Low scoring. Ugly in trenches. Decided by one interior pressure in the fourth quarter. The team that protects the A-gaps wins the toss-up FPI can’t see.
