Florida’s 53-Point Offense Meets Its First Real Pass-Rush Test in Columbia

Florida has scored like a video game through four weeks. The Gators average 53.5 points per game, No. 2 nationally. Then Ole Miss showed the other side: 28 points allowed in a blowout win.

Missouri is a different animal. The Tigers are 32-11 since 2023. They do not fold on homecoming.

Start with the edge. Sophomore Daeden Hopkins posted 3.5 sacks against Mississippi State. That is the second-best single-game total in Missouri history. Florida’s tackles will get a full four quarters of him.

Here is what I’d watch. Does Florida keep tight ends and backs in to chip? Or does it trust five-man protection and quick-game throws? Fast answers beat pass rushers. Three-step drops and hot reads take Hopkins out of the game.

Play-action matters too. If the run game stays efficient, linebackers bite. That opens crossers behind them. Hopkins then has to respect the run before he pins his ears back.

Now the other sideline. Austin Simmons is 70-of-107 for 947 yards, 11 touchdowns and no picks. That is roughly 8.9 yards per attempt. He protects the football and finds his second read.

Florida’s defense has to change the picture. Disguise the coverage. Show Cover 3, then rotate to quarters late. Make Simmons hold the ball an extra beat. He has been clean so far, so late rotations and pressure are the answer.

Sumrall’s message all week was blunt: look in the mirror. Those 28 points against Ole Miss are the mirror. Missouri’s offense has the efficiency to exploit the same leaks.

Recruiting & Roster Depth Context

Ranked road wins are recruiting currency. Florida is No. 8, its highest ranking since it sat at No. 6 in December 2020. Sumrall is also the seventh Gators coach to open his UF tenure 4-0.

That momentum shows up on the trail. The Gators just landed 2027 four-star forward Ian Condon in basketball. In football, Florida made a strong move with 2028 four-star quarterback Hudson West after his return to The Swamp. Another 2028 four-star, EDGE Keoni Snipes, has named his top schools.

Those players are watching Saturday. A win at Faurot Field is a talking point on every visit. A loss is a talking point for rivals.

There is irony in the opposite huddle. Simmons was once a Gators commitment. Now his tape is a scouting report the defense has to solve.

The bigger lesson is about the trenches. Florida can win shootouts for a month. Sustaining it takes edge rushers and tackles who win one-on-one. That is where four-star and five-star classes pay off. Hopkins is the model: a disruptive edge who changes a game plan by himself.

Florida wins in Columbia. It does not cruise.

My call: Gators 35, Tigers 28. The spread is 5.5 and the total is 57.5, so that lands on the over and a Florida cover. Both offenses are efficient, and neither defense is a lockdown unit.

That puts Florida at 5-0 and 3-0 in the SEC. It also keeps the Gators firmly in the playoff conversation.

Sumrall’s fear is the right one. Florida has lost three of its last four trips to Missouri. The all-time record in Columbia is 2-4. History says this stadium bites.

But this Florida team has answers on offense that past versions did not. If the tackles hold up on early downs, the Gators leave with a win. If Hopkins wrecks the pocket, it is a coin flip. Either way, this game will tell us whether Florida is a playoff team or a hot start.
