Five-star center Zaniya Johnson has committed to South Carolina women’s basketball, giving head coach Dawn Staley another major recruiting victory as the Gamecocks continue building their future frontcourt. The 6-foot-4 prospect from Biloxi, Mississippi, chose South Carolina over LSU, delivering a significant boost to the program’s 2027 recruiting class.
Johnson announced her decision on October 21, ending a recruitment that had attracted interest from several prominent programs. Her commitment adds another elite prospect to a recruiting group that is beginning to take shape under Staley, whose program has established itself as one of the most consistent forces in women’s college basketball.
Ranked No. 18 nationally in ESPN’s 2027 recruiting rankings, Johnson brings the size and traditional center profile that could become increasingly valuable as South Carolina prepares for significant changes in its frontcourt.
For Staley, this is more than another recruiting win. It is an opportunity to secure a long-term interior presence capable of strengthening the Gamecocks’ identity on both ends of the floor.
South Carolina Wins the Battle for Zaniya Johnson
Johnson’s recruitment eventually came down to two finalists: South Carolina and LSU.
Florida State, Texas A&M and Mississippi State were also among the programs initially considered, but the talented center narrowed her options before making her final decision.
South Carolina ultimately emerged as her destination, giving Staley another highly regarded prospect to develop within a program that regularly competes for championships.
Johnson’s decision also highlights the growing momentum behind the Gamecocks’ 2027 recruiting class. She becomes the third player to commit to South Carolina during the month, joining five-star guard GG Banks and four-star guard Taylor Brown.
Banks, ranked No. 4 nationally, is one of the highest-rated players in the class, while Brown, ranked No. 30, adds another promising perimeter option.
Together, the three commitments give South Carolina an encouraging foundation for the future, with talent arriving at multiple positions.
Johnson’s addition is particularly important because elite centers can be difficult to secure through traditional high school recruiting. Her commitment gives the Gamecocks an opportunity to develop a promising interior player before she reaches the college level.
Inside Johnson’s Recruitment and Her South Carolina Visit
Johnson’s connection with South Carolina became more visible during her visit to Columbia in early October.
According to her social media activity, she began the visit on October 2 and spent the weekend around the program. She was also spotted alongside Staley before South Carolina’s football game against Kentucky.
The visit offered Johnson an opportunity to experience the atmosphere surrounding the university and spend time around the coaching staff.
For a recruit choosing between two major programs, those personal interactions can play an important role in the final decision.
Staley has built a reputation for recruiting elite talent while developing players into important contributors at the collegiate level. Her success and South Carolina’s sustained presence among the nation’s top teams have helped the program remain attractive to highly ranked prospects.
Johnson’s decision represents another example of that recruiting appeal.
At 6-foot-4, she has the physical profile to compete in the paint, where size, positioning and rebounding often determine the outcome of crucial possessions. Her development will ultimately determine how quickly she can make an impact, but her commitment gives South Carolina a promising piece for its future rotation.
Why Johnson’s Commitment Matters for the Gamecocks
One of the most significant aspects of Johnson’s arrival is the position she plays.
South Carolina has recruited plenty of talented forwards during Staley’s tenure, but the program has also relied on the transfer portal to bring in experienced, traditional centers.
Kamilla Cardoso joined the Gamecocks from Syracuse before the 2021-22 season and became a major presence in the middle. More recently, Staley added Madina Okot from Mississippi State ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
Both moves demonstrated the importance of having a true center who can protect the rim, rebound consistently and provide an interior scoring option.
Johnson could offer South Carolina another opportunity to develop that kind of player from the high school level.
A traditional center can influence a game without dominating the scoring column. Strong defensive positioning, offensive rebounds, screens and the ability to finish near the basket can create opportunities for teammates while forcing opposing defenses to adjust.
If Johnson develops into that type of player, her presence could give South Carolina greater flexibility when constructing future lineups.
The commitment also arrives as the Gamecocks prepare for potential changes to their frontcourt.
South Carolina’s Frontcourt Faces a Transition
South Carolina is expected to lose forwards Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins to the WNBA next year, according to the original report.
Their departures would create important questions about how the Gamecocks maintain their size and versatility.
Assuming no additional transfer departures, the program is expected to return several frontcourt options after the current season, including Alicia Tournebize, Kelsi Andrews, Kaeli Wynn, Adhel Tac, Joyce Edwards and Oliviyah Edwards.
Those players provide Staley with several possibilities when assembling her rotation.
However, the ability to use a forward at center is not necessarily the same as having a traditional post player who specializes in interior defense and rebounding.
Johnson’s commitment addresses that distinction by giving the coaching staff another potential center to develop.
Her eventual role will depend on her progress, the roster situation and the competition for playing time. Nevertheless, recruiting a player with her size and national ranking provides South Carolina with another option as it plans for the seasons ahead.
The Gamecocks will have time to evaluate how she fits into their long-term plans before she arrives on campus.
Another Five-Star Recruit Could Join South Carolina
South Carolina’s recruiting momentum may not end with Johnson.
Five-star forward Jordyn Palmer is scheduled to announce her college commitment on October 23 at 6 p.m. Eastern time.
Palmer is considering four programs: UCLA, Penn State, Ohio State and South Carolina.
She previously visited Columbia alongside Taylor Brown and another member of the recruiting group in September, giving the Gamecocks an opportunity to make their case.
A commitment from Palmer would add another highly ranked forward to a class that already includes an elite guard, another talented backcourt prospect and Johnson in the middle.
However, Palmer’s decision remains separate from Johnson’s commitment, and South Carolina must wait for her announcement before knowing whether another recruiting victory is coming.
For now, the Gamecocks can celebrate securing one of the nation’s most highly regarded centers in the 2027 class.
What Comes Next for Dawn Staley’s 2027 Recruiting Class?
Johnson’s commitment strengthens South Carolina’s position as it continues assembling its next generation of talent.
The current group features three commitments, led by five-star prospects Johnson and Banks, alongside four-star guard Brown.
Their different skill sets could eventually provide the foundation for a balanced roster, although player development and future recruiting decisions will determine how the class ultimately comes together.
Johnson, in particular, gives the Gamecocks a promising option at a position that has played an important role in the program’s success.
Staley’s ability to recruit elite talent has kept South Carolina in the national conversation, and adding a highly ranked center reinforces the program’s long-term plans.
The immediate focus will remain on developing the current roster and pursuing additional recruits. But the message from Johnson’s decision is clear: South Carolina continues to attract players capable of shaping its future.
Zaniya Johnson’s commitment to South Carolina women’s basketball for 2027 gives Dawn Staley another five-star prospect, strengthens the Gamecocks’ future frontcourt and delivers a significant recruiting win over LSU.
