Why Jordan Lee Needed Answers From Dawn Staley Before Choosing South Carolina

Jordan Lee did not make the decision to leave Texas without asking some important questions. Before transferring to South Carolina, the junior guard wanted to understand exactly how her game would fit into Dawn Staley’s system and what the move could mean for her professional basketball ambitions.

After helping Texas reach the Final Four in consecutive seasons, Lee had good reasons to think carefully about her next step. She had established herself as a productive guard in one of the nation’s top programs, and leaving that environment required more than simply finding another team.

During her recruitment, Lee asked Staley numerous questions about her potential role with the Gamecocks. Even after visiting Columbia, she contacted the South Carolina coach again because she wanted additional clarity before making her decision.

Speaking at the SEC Basketball Tipoff on October 13, Staley described Lee as someone who knew what she wanted and took the transfer process seriously.

For Lee, one of the biggest questions was whether the skills she developed at Texas would translate effectively to South Carolina.

“Just seeing how some of those things that I’ve done well the past two years at Texas were going to translate to her system, that was kind of the biggest one,” Lee explained.

She also wanted to learn from South Carolina’s previous experience with transfer guard Ta’Niya Latson. Lee was interested in understanding what Staley believed Latson did well and how she adjusted to playing in the Gamecocks’ system.

Those questions reflected Lee’s desire to understand the program before committing to it.

Dawn Staley Sees More Potential in Jordan Lee’s Game

Lee has already demonstrated that she can contribute at a high level. During her sophomore season at Texas, she averaged 13.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

She also shot 34.8% from three-point range on 5.3 attempts per game and played an important role in the Longhorns’ run to the Final Four.

South Carolina now hopes to build on that production while giving Lee opportunities to expand her offensive game.

Staley believes Lee possesses the defensive ability and discipline necessary to make an immediate contribution. She described the guard as a “high-performing, low maintenance” player who responds well to coaching and understands what is expected of her.

According to Staley, Lee is the type of player who can receive specific instructions and carry them out without requiring constant direction.

Her defensive ability is particularly important as South Carolina looks to replace some of the qualities it lost with Raven Johnson’s departure.

“She is an elite defender — like, elite, elite,” Staley said.

Staley added that Lee could help the Gamecocks recover some of what Johnson brought defensively. However, she also made it clear that South Carolina will need Lee to contribute offensively and potentially accept greater responsibility than she had at Texas.

“The same qualities she gave Texas, we need her to be and probably lean on her a little bit more,” Staley said.

That expectation could make Lee’s transition particularly important. She is arriving with experience in high-pressure games, but her responsibilities at South Carolina may require her to become a more complete offensive player.

A Two-Year Plan With the WNBA in Mind

Lee’s decision also reflects her longer-term ambitions. She wants to play professionally, and Staley believes South Carolina can help her develop the additional skills necessary to pursue that goal.

Rather than asking Lee to abandon what made her successful at Texas, Staley wants to build on those strengths and introduce other dimensions to her game.

Texas had established offensive systems that suited Lee’s abilities. At South Carolina, Staley sees an opportunity for the guard to explore a more flexible approach while continuing to develop her existing skills.

The coach hopes the next two years will help position Lee to hear her name called on WNBA Draft Day.

Lee has already experienced the demands of competing for a national championship, and her defensive reputation gives her a foundation to build upon. The next challenge is translating that experience into a larger role for the Gamecocks.

Lee has also spoken positively about working with Staley, describing her as a coach who understands the demands she places on her players and is intentional about how she teaches the game.

For South Carolina, the transfer represents an opportunity to add an experienced guard who has competed at the highest level of college basketball.

For Lee, it is a chance to develop beyond the player she was at Texas and prepare for the next stage of her career.

The central question now is how much her game can grow under Staley. South Carolina already knows what Lee brings defensively. If she can maintain that impact while becoming a more consistent offensive threat, she could become an important piece of the Gamecocks’ plans over the next two seasons.
