Dawn Staley Has a Chance to Land a Top-Five Recruit — GG Banks Makes Her Decision Today

South Carolina women’s basketball could be on the verge of a major recruiting victory.

Five-star guard Jezelle “GG” Banks, one of the most highly rated players in the 2027 recruiting class, is set to announce her college commitment on Saturday, October 10, with the Gamecocks among her final three choices.

Banks has narrowed her options to South Carolina, LSU and Texas, setting up an important recruiting decision for three programs competing for elite backcourt talent. Her announcement is scheduled to be streamed from her home state of Delaware at 1 p.m. ET. 1

For Dawn Staley and the Gamecocks, the stakes are significant.

A Recent Visit Put South Carolina in the Picture

Banks visited Columbia during the weekend of September 18 alongside fellow 2027 prospects Jordyn Palmer and Taylor Brown.

The visit gave South Carolina an opportunity to showcase its program, facilities and basketball environment to three highly rated recruits.

Brown has since committed to the Gamecocks, choosing South Carolina over Tennessee and North Carolina on October 3.

Now, Banks has her own decision to make, and a commitment from her would give Staley’s 2027 class another major addition. 2

South Carolina’s interest in Banks also extends beyond that visit.

The program offered her in 2023, and Staley and assistant coach Jolette Law recently watched her play in Las Vegas.

Why GG Banks Is Such a Valuable Target

Banks is ranked No. 4 nationally in the Rivals Industry Ranking for the 2027 class and is considered one of the country’s premier combo guards.

At approximately 5-foot-10, she brings a different offensive profile from Brown.

Banks is a natural scorer who uses her quickness, ball-handling and changes of pace to create opportunities against defenders.

She can attack the basket, finish in traffic and force opposing defenses to collapse, creating passing opportunities for open teammates.

Her ability to create off the dribble could also make her a valuable perimeter defender.

Those qualities make her an intriguing potential fit for a South Carolina program that values defensive intensity, pace and versatility in the backcourt.

Taylor Brown’s Commitment Adds Another Layer

Brown’s decision to join South Carolina gives the Gamecocks an early commitment in the 2027 class.

Landing Banks as well would give Staley another highly talented guard with a different offensive skill set.

Brown and Banks are both point guards, but their contrasting strengths could provide options for different lineups and game situations.

However, Banks has not committed to South Carolina, and her decision remains between the Gamecocks, LSU and Texas.

The outcome will determine whether Staley adds another elite prospect to the backcourt or must continue pursuing other recruiting options.

Three Programs, One Decision

South Carolina has the benefit of Banks’ recent official visit and an established recruiting relationship.

LSU and Texas, however, remain serious contenders, and the final decision belongs to Banks.

With a top-five recruit on the line, Saturday represents an important moment for the Gamecocks’ 2027 recruiting efforts.

Will GG Banks join Taylor Brown in South Carolina’s 2027 class, or will LSU or Texas win the recruiting battle?

The answer is expected when Banks announces her decision from Delaware.
