Taylor Brown Sets South Carolina Official Visit as Gamecocks Target Another Elite 2027 Point Guard
Taylor Brown South Carolina official visit 2027 recruiting has become one of the more intriguing storylines surrounding Dawn Staley’s next recruiting class, with the highly regarded point guard set to make her way to Columbia later this month.
Brown, a 5-foot-7 guard from powerhouse Long Island Lutheran in New York, will take her official visit to South Carolina the weekend of September 19. She becomes the Gamecocks’ fifth known official visitor for the fall, adding another major name to a recruiting board that already features several of the nation’s best 2027 prospects.
South Carolina extended Brown a scholarship offer in May. Since then, the Gamecocks have remained firmly in the mix for a player viewed as one of the class’s premier lead guards.
Brown brings scoring, passing and defensive edge
Brown’s appeal starts with her ability to create offense without losing sight of the bigger picture.
She is an aggressive scorer who can get downhill, absorb contact and finish around the basket, but she also has the court vision to make teammates better. That combination is particularly valuable for a South Carolina program that needs to keep its point-guard pipeline stocked.
Defensively, Brown has developed a reputation for making life miserable for opposing guards. She has even adopted Gary Payton’s famous nickname, “The Glove,” a nod to her lockdown approach on that end of the floor.
Her résumé already includes a Naismith All-American Underclassmen honorable mention selection as a sophomore. Brown has also played at Long Island Lutheran, one of the country’s premier high school programs and a pipeline that has produced numerous high-level college players.
Brown’s junior season was cut short in February by an unspecified knee injury. Her recovery has been part of the evaluation process, but her talent has kept her firmly among the names to watch in the 2027 cycle.
A crowded recruiting race
Brown is not entering a quiet recruitment.
Her scheduled visits include some of the biggest programs in the country:
Tennessee: June 25
Virginia Tech: September 3
South Carolina: September 19
North Carolina: October 3
She had previously been scheduled to visit Florida State on August 29, but that trip appears to have been canceled.
The competition tells the story. Brown is attracting serious interest from programs that see her as a potential floor general capable of controlling tempo, creating shots and defending at a high level.
Her national rankings also underline why the Gamecocks are pursuing her. Brown is ranked No. 19 by Rivals, No. 24 by 247Sports and No. 30 by ESPN, according to the information surrounding her recruitment. She is generally considered one of the top point guards in the class, behind elite prospects Kaleena Smith and Jezelle “GG” Banks.
Why South Carolina needs a point guard
The timing makes plenty of sense for the Gamecocks.
South Carolina’s 2027 class is expected to be relatively small after the program brought in a large 2026 group. Recruiting coverage has identified point guard and post as major areas of need, making Brown a particularly logical target.
The Gamecocks are also recruiting several other elite guards and perimeter players, meaning Staley and her staff are casting a wide net rather than relying on one recruitment to solve the position.
That includes Banks, one of the most coveted players in the country.
South Carolina’s 2027 visitor list keeps growing
Banks has confirmed official visits to South Carolina, LSU, Texas and Ohio State. South Carolina is also pursuing Oregon guard Kaylor Buse, who has an official visit to Columbia scheduled for October 2.
Buse has already visited Washington and TCU and has additional trips planned to Utah and Oregon before heading to South Carolina. Her recruitment has gained momentum following an impressive summer, with her stock reportedly rising.
The Gamecocks will also host Zaniya Johnson, a 6-foot-4 post from Biloxi, Mississippi. Johnson is ranked among the top 20 prospects nationally and is regarded as one of the premier interior players in the 2027 class.
Then there is Jordyn Palmer, another enormous prize on South Carolina’s recruiting board.
Palmer is a highly ranked wing with impressive versatility and has already confirmed that South Carolina and Ohio State are among her planned official visits. She also could visit UCLA, Maryland and Penn State. Recent recruiting coverage lists Palmer among the major 2027 prospects South Carolina is pursuing.
September could shape the Gamecocks’ future
For South Carolina, the significance of Brown’s visit goes beyond adding another name to a calendar.
The Gamecocks are trying to build a 2027 class around a limited number of scholarships, meaning every spot carries enormous value. Recruiting an elite point guard is especially important because the position can dictate how an entire roster functions.
Brown fits that profile.
She has the scoring ability to generate offense when a possession breaks down, the passing instincts to organize teammates and the defensive mentality to pressure opposing guards for 40 minutes. Those qualities make her more than simply another highly ranked recruit.
The September 19 visit will give Brown her first official opportunity to experience South Carolina from the inside: the campus, the coaching staff, the facilities and the atmosphere surrounding one of the sport’s most dominant programs.
And with Banks, Buse, Johnson and Palmer also in the picture, the Gamecocks are making it clear that their 2027 recruiting strategy is centered on elite talent at multiple positions.
The next step is simple: get Brown to Columbia, make an impression and see whether the relationship can turn a recruiting visit into something much bigger.
For South Carolina, Taylor Brown South Carolina official visit 2027 recruiting could be an early piece of a class that ultimately reshapes the Gamecocks’ backcourt for years to come.
