Manchester United’s 25-man Champions League squad for the 2026/27 season has been confirmed, with the club preparing to return to Europe’s biggest competition after submitting its List A to UEFA ahead of the league phase.
are back among Europe’s elite, and the first major step toward their Champions League campaign is now complete. UEFA confirmed on September 3 that all 36 clubs had submitted their league-phase selections, with the opening round of matches scheduled for September 8-10.
For United, the European adventure begins at home against Sabah FK next week, before a demanding league-phase schedule brings meetings with Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Roma, Sporting CP, RB Leipzig, Villarreal and Como.
The names on United’s list underline the scale of the challenge.
United submit their Champions League squad
The club had until September 2 to submit its List A to UEFA for the league phase. Under the competition regulations, clubs can register a maximum of 25 players on List A, with at least eight places reserved for locally trained players.
United’s submitted squad contains 25 players across four positions groups.

The list gives manager Ruben Amorim plenty of attacking options, while the midfield contains a mixture of established leadership and fresh energy.
Bruno Fernandes remains the obvious creative heartbeat. Around him, United have assembled a group featuring Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, giving the midfield several different profiles for the long European campaign.
Further forward, the choices are equally intriguing.
Marcus Rashford, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee provide Amorim with several combinations, while Amad offers another option capable of changing the rhythm of a match.
Why are Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro missing?
Perhaps the biggest talking point surrounding the squad is the absence of Kobbie Mainoo and Leny Yoro from the 25-man List A.
Their omission, however, does not automatically mean they are unavailable for the Champions League.
UEFA permits clubs to register an unlimited number of eligible players on List B. A player can qualify for that list if he meets the age and club-registration requirements, including being born on or after January 1, 2005 and having spent the required period eligible for the club since turning 15. List B can be updated throughout the season and must be submitted no later than the day before the relevant match.
That distinction is important because a Champions League squad is not simply a list of the only players a manager can use.
For younger players who satisfy UEFA’s locally trained criteria, List B can provide an important route into the competition without taking one of the 25 List A places.
United face a demanding European schedule
The timing could hardly be more exciting for supporters.
The 2026/27 Champions League league phase begins on September 8, with United among the 36 clubs competing across eight matchdays. The league phase will run through January, with United facing eight different opponents rather than playing a traditional group-stage format.
Their opponents include some of the biggest names in European football.
Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid bring heavyweight Champions League pedigree. Roma and Sporting CP add tactical and technical challenges, while RB Leipzig and Villarreal have developed reputations for aggressive, high-intensity football.
Como, meanwhile, represents a different kind of test.
That mixture means United will have little room for slow starts. Every point matters in the league phase, with the final standings determining who progresses directly to the knockout rounds and who must navigate the play-off route.
UEFA’s official Champions League squad and registration guide
The squad can still change later
United’s List A is now locked for the league phase, but it is not necessarily the final version of the squad for the entire European campaign.
If United advance to the knockout phase, UEFA allows clubs to register a maximum of three new eligible players before the February deadline. For the 2026/27 competition, those registrations must be completed by February 4, 2027.
That could become significant when the January transfer window arrives.
Injuries, departures and new signings could all alter the balance of Amorim’s squad before the knockout rounds. UEFA also has specific provisions allowing replacements in certain long-term injury or illness situations, subject to strict conditions.
For now, though, the focus is firmly on the opening weeks.
Old Trafford is preparing for the return of Champions League nights, and United’s 25-man selection gives supporters their first clear look at the core group tasked with carrying the club through its European campaign.
There will be difficult nights, intimidating opponents and moments when the pressure inside the stadium becomes almost tangible. But after being away from the competition, Manchester United are finally back on the Champions League stage.
And the story begins with the Manchester United 25-man Champions League squad for the 2026/27 season.
