Florida Gators to Start Tramell Jones at Texas as Aaron Philo Battles Shoulder Injury

Florida is heading to Austin with a different look under center.

The Gators are expected to start Tramell Jones on Saturday at Texas, according to a report Friday from On3’s Pete Nakos. The move comes as Aaron Philo continues to work through a shoulder issue that has limited him in practice and left him listed as questionable on the SEC availability report.

Nakos reported Jones handled the first-team reps all week while Philo was limited, though Florida will not make the call official until Saturday morning. If it holds, it will be the first college start for the sophomore.

For Florida, the timing matters. A noon kick on ABC in Austin is not where you want to be breaking in a new starter, but this is not a panic move either. This is the situation Jon Sumrall has been preparing for since Philo’s status became uncertain.

Why Jones Is Getting The Nod Now

This is about availability and preparation. Philo has been the guy for most of the season after arriving from Georgia Tech, throwing for 1,341 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions. He has given Florida stability, but the shoulder injury this week changed the practice dynamic.

Jones took the bulk of the work with the ones, which tells you how the staff was leaning by Thursday. Sumrall addressed it directly earlier in the week without tipping his hand for Saturday.

“Tramell got reps in practice. He’s going to continue to get reps,” Sumrall said. “I’ve said this publicly: I think Tramell can be our starting quarterback here, and we can win football games.”

That confidence is important because Jones’ game action this season has been limited to reserve and second-half duty. In five appearances he is 23-of-29 for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The 79.3% completion number stands out, even in a small sample, because it has come without a full game plan built around him.

Sumrall also pointed to how Jones handled the offseason, choosing to stay in Gainesville after Sumrall was hired instead of entering the portal.

“Tramell is gonna be ready when his number is called,” Sumrall said. “I love the way he’s handled himself. Tramell’s been great. Philo’s been great.”

What Florida’s Offense Looks Like With Jones

Philo and Jones are not the same quarterback, and that will show up in how Florida calls the game.

Philo has operated as a rhythm thrower who can work the intermediate windows and keep Florida on schedule on third down. With Jones, expect Florida to lean harder into run-pass balance and defined reads early to get him comfortable.

That could mean more under-center and pistol run looks on first down to create second-and-manageable, plus quick game and play-action boot concepts that move the pocket away from Texas pressure. On third-and-short, look for spacing routes rather than vertical shots.

Texas has the defensive front to make any quarterback uncomfortable in Austin. If Florida can stay out of third-and-8-plus situations, it protects a first-time starter from having to win late in the down against man coverage. The key stat Saturday will not be yards per attempt. It will be red-zone efficiency and explosive play rate. If Jones can finish drives without turnovers, Florida has a path.

The other factor is pass protection. If Texas can get pressure with four and drop seven, the windows shrink for a quarterback making his first start on the road. Expect tight end chips and backside protection slides to help Jones early.

Roster Impact and What It Means For The QB Room

This start, even if it is injury-driven, answers a big question about Florida’s depth chart.

Jones staying after the coaching change was a signal. He wanted to compete. Sumrall has consistently spoken about him as a starting-caliber player, not just a reliable No. 2. Getting him a start in an SEC road game is a major evaluation point for 2026 as much as for Saturday.

If Jones plays well, Florida suddenly has real leverage in the room. It can let Philo heal fully without forcing a game-time decision every Saturday in November. If Jones struggles, the staff still knows exactly what it has and where the portal focus needs to be.

SEC Stakes In Austin

Florida at Texas is not just another conference game. It is a measuring stick for where the Gators sit in the SEC after a transition year.

Texas brings SEC-level speed on defense and a home environment that will test communication. For Florida, winning on the road with a backup quarterback would change how the rest of the schedule is viewed. It would give Sumrall a signature moment early in his tenure and keep Florida’s postseason positioning alive.

The Gators beat Texas in Gainesville last October. That game is already in the rearview for this roster, but the conference familiarity helps. Florida knows what Steve Sarkisian’s structure wants to do. The challenge now is executing it with a quarterback taking his first college start.

What To Watch Saturday Morning

Three things will determine how far Florida can take this plan.

First, Philo’s pregame workout. Even with Jones taking first-team reps, the final call will come Saturday morning. If Philo can throw without restriction, Florida could keep him as an emergency option.

Second, the first 15 plays. Does Sumrall script easy completions, screens, and runs for Jones, or does he trust him to push the ball early? That script will tell you how much confidence the staff really has.

Third, turnover margin. Texas will try to force a second-read mistake. If Florida is plus-one or even in turnovers, a ball-control approach works.

The Gators did not plan to be in this spot, but they prepared for it. Now Florida Gators to start Tramell Jones at Texas looks like more than a contingency. It looks like the plan for Saturday in Austin.
