Dawn Staley has landed another major recruiting victory, and South Carolina women’s basketball is adding one of the most highly ranked guards in the 2027 class.
Five-star point guard Jezelle “GG” Banks, ranked No. 4 overall in ESPN’s 2027 recruiting rankings, has committed to the Gamecocks, choosing South Carolina over LSU and Texas.
Banks announced her decision on October 10, giving Staley another elite prospect as she continues to build the program’s future.
The commitment also strengthens South Carolina’s 2027 recruiting class, which already includes point guard Taylor Brown, who chose the Gamecocks over Tennessee and North Carolina on October 3.
Two highly regarded guards have now chosen South Carolina in the same recruiting class.
That could become an important development for Staley as she prepares for the program’s next generation.
Who Is GG Banks?
Banks is a highly rated guard from Wilmington, Delaware, who currently plays at The St. James Academy in the Washington, D.C., area.
Her production at the high school level has helped establish her as one of the nation’s premier prospects.
During her sophomore season, Banks averaged 21.7 points and 4.8 assists per game, earning the 2024-25 Gatorade Delaware Girls Basketball Player of the Year award.
As a junior, she averaged 14.3 points and 5.4 assists, demonstrating her ability to contribute as both a scorer and a playmaker.
Banks has also attracted attention beyond the high school circuit.
During the 2026 WNBA All-Star weekend, she participated in the Shooting Stars competition alongside current and former WNBA players and other elite young talents.
Her consecutive deep three-pointers during the event helped put her shooting ability on display in front of a wider basketball audience.
Her combination of scoring, playmaking and perimeter shooting makes her an intriguing addition to South Carolina’s future backcourt.
What GG Banks’ Commitment Means for Taylor Brown
One of the biggest storylines surrounding this commitment is how Banks could fit alongside Brown.
Both players have experience at point guard, giving Staley two highly regarded young guards to develop within the same recruiting class.
Brown is known as a traditional floor general who can organize an offense and involve her teammates.
Banks brings another dimension, with her scoring ability, perimeter shooting and potential to operate both on and off the ball.
That versatility could give South Carolina several options when deciding how to structure its backcourt.
Banks could handle point guard responsibilities, play alongside Brown or move into a scoring role on the wing, depending on the lineup and matchup.
Rather than viewing the two commitments as competing for the same position, Staley could use their complementary skills to create a more flexible offense.
Of course, their eventual roles will depend on their development, the rest of the roster and how they adjust to the college game.
But the combination gives South Carolina an encouraging foundation for its future guard rotation.
Why This Commitment Matters for Dawn Staley
South Carolina’s recruiting success has been built around attracting elite talent and developing players who can compete at the highest level.
Landing Banks after securing Brown reinforces that strategy.
Banks chose the Gamecocks over two prominent programs in LSU and Texas, giving South Carolina another significant recruiting win against strong competition.
Staley and her staff had pursued Banks for years, extending an offer in July 2023.
Banks later visited Columbia in September alongside Brown and fellow 2027 prospect Jordyn Palmer.
That visit came shortly before Brown announced her commitment, and Banks has now followed with her own decision to join the Gamecocks.
According to the Greenville News report, Staley has now secured a recruit ranked in ESPN’s top six for four consecutive years.
That level of recruiting consistency matters because it gives a program a chance to plan beyond a single season and continue replenishing its talent.
Banks’ commitment does not guarantee future championships, but it gives South Carolina another highly regarded player to build around.
The Bigger Picture for South Carolina
With Banks and Brown now committed, attention will turn to how South Carolina completes its 2027 recruiting class.
Jordyn Palmer, who visited Columbia with both guards, is another prospect to watch as the Gamecocks continue pursuing elite talent.
For now, Banks’ decision gives Gamecock fans another reason to be excited about the program’s future.
She arrives as a top-five recruit with proven scoring production, playmaking ability and experience competing against elite talent.
And alongside Brown, she could help form a backcourt with the flexibility to create opportunities for herself and her teammates.
Dawn Staley has secured another five-star commitment.
The next challenge will be turning that recruiting success into chemistry, development and winning basketball when Banks eventually arrives in Columbia.
