Dawn Staley Hosts Three Elite 2027 Recruits at South Carolina Football Game

South Carolina women’s basketball 2027 recruits Dawn Staley welcomed a major recruiting weekend to Columbia as three highly touted prospects joined the Gamecocks’ head coach at Williams-Brice Stadium for South Carolina’s SEC football opener against Mississippi State.

GG Banks, Taylor Brown and Jordyn Palmer were all in attendance Saturday, Sept. 19, giving Staley and her staff an opportunity to showcase the atmosphere surrounding South Carolina athletics while the Gamecocks football team prepared for its conference opener.

The afternoon did not begin on schedule. Severe weather pushed kickoff from 4:15 p.m. to 5:35 p.m., but the delay did little to take the energy out of the stadium.

For the three recruits, the football game was another piece of an official visit that began Friday.

Three major names from the 2027 class

Banks and Palmer arrived in Columbia carrying five-star status, while Brown is ranked as a four-star prospect.

According to ESPN’s 2027 recruiting rankings, Banks is ranked No. 4 nationally and Palmer No. 7. Brown sits at No. 30 overall.

The group also brings a combination of familiarity and high-level talent.

Banks, a 5-foot-10 point guard, and Brown, a 5-foot-6 point guard, previously played together at Ursuline Academy in Delaware. They have since gone their separate ways.

Banks now attends St. James Performance Academy in Washington, D.C., while Brown plays for Long Island Lutheran in New York.

Palmer adds a different dimension. The 6-foot-1 wing/small forward is from Pennsylvania and attends Westtown School.

Together, the three prospects represent another significant recruiting opportunity for a South Carolina program that has consistently operated near the top of the women’s college basketball landscape.

Football, fishing and the Gamecock experience

The recruits’ visit has included more than meetings and campus tours.

Social media posts showed the prospects arriving in Columbia on Sept. 18 and taking part in some of the familiar activities associated with major college recruiting visits, including photo opportunities around campus.

There was also time for some less formal fun.

South Carolina sophomore guard Ayla McDowell was seen fishing with Palmer, offering a glimpse into the personal side of the weekend away from the intensity of recruiting conversations.

Then came Saturday’s football atmosphere.

With thousands of fans filling Williams-Brice Stadium, Staley was spotted alongside Banks, Brown and Palmer. Assistant coach Lisa Boyer was also with the group, along with current South Carolina players Chloe Kitts, Jerzy Robinson and Justine Loubens.

The scene provided the recruits with a firsthand look at the energy surrounding Gamecock athletics.

The football program was hosting Mississippi State in its first SEC game of the season, making the visit especially significant as the stadium filled with garnet-and-black supporters.

South Carolina already has recruiting momentum

Staley’s interest in the 2027 class comes as South Carolina continues to build one of the deepest rosters in women’s college basketball.

The Gamecocks enter the 2026-27 season with 15 players on the roster. Their season opener is scheduled for Nov. 2 against Maryland in Paris.

That roster already includes a highly regarded freshman class.

South Carolina signed five players from the 2026 recruiting cycle, a group ESPN ranked No. 2 nationally. Oliviyah Edwards was the highest-ranked member of that class, coming in at No. 3 overall.

That kind of recruiting success has made every visit to Columbia worth watching.

For prospects such as Banks, Brown and Palmer, the weekend offers a chance to see what life around the program looks like beyond a basketball practice. They can experience the campus, meet current players, spend time with the coaching staff and absorb the atmosphere created by one of the nation’s most recognizable women’s basketball programs.

A familiar recruiting strategy

Hosting multiple elite prospects during the same weekend is hardly unusual for South Carolina.

In this case, there is an added connection because Banks and Brown already know each other from their time as teammates at Ursuline Academy.

That familiarity can make a group visit particularly interesting. Instead of experiencing the recruiting process entirely on their own, the prospects are sharing the weekend with players who understand their backgrounds and basketball experiences.

For Staley, meanwhile, the weekend represents another opportunity to put South Carolina’s entire athletic environment on display.

The football game, campus activities and time with current players all become part of the recruiting pitch without being confined to a basketball gym.

There is still a long road ahead before the 2027 recruiting cycle reaches its conclusion, and an official visit does not determine where a prospect will eventually play. But when three nationally ranked prospects spend a weekend together in Columbia, the recruiting significance is difficult to miss.

For now, Banks, Brown and Palmer are taking in the experience, while Staley and the Gamecocks continue to build relationships with some of the most prominent names in the class.
