Former New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones has been added to the active roster of the Minnesota Vikings ahead of their crucial Wild Card playoff matchup against the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football.
Jones, who recently parted ways with the Giants after a six-year stint, has signed a short-term contract with the Vikings. The 27-year-old QB will be earning a prorated portion of the veteran minimum salary of $1.125 million per year for his time in Minnesota.
Despite the hefty $160 million, four-year extension he signed with the Giants prior to the 2023 season, Jones fell out of favor last year and was ultimately released. He earned over $108 million during his time in New York.
The Vikings are hoping Jones’ experience can provide a boost to their roster as they take on the Rams in what is shaping up to be one of the most tightly contested first-round playoff games. However, Jones is currently listed as the third-string quarterback behind Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens, indicating he is unlikely to see significant playing time barring any injuries or unforeseen circumstances.
The Vikings will be relying on Darnold to recapture his impressive 2024 form after a tough outing against the Detroit Lions in the regular season finale. Darnold has put up strong numbers this season, but is yet to prove he can deliver on the biggest stage.
