The Real Reason Mario Cristobal Knew Cam Ward Would Play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl

Cam Ward’s decision to play in the Pop-Tarts Bowl has sparked conversation, but for Mario Cristobal, it was no surprise.

“I’m playing in the game,” Ward announced confidently before the Heisman Trophy ceremony, adding, “it’s exciting to go out in your college career and try to win your last game.”

This move defied current trends, where top NFL draft prospects often sit out bowl games without championship implications.

Cristobal, however, saw it coming.

“I wasn’t surprised,” he said on WQAM’s “Joe Rose Show.”

“I mean, we have unfinished business.”

Ward transferred to Miami for the 2024 season after stints at Incarnate Word and Washington State, aiming to win championships.

Though the Hurricanes fell short, finishing 10-2 and missing both the ACC Championship Game and College Football Playoff, Ward made history.

He set school records with 4,123 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and a 67.4% completion rate.

He’s tied for the most career passing touchdowns (155) in NCAA Division I and could claim the record outright in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Ward’s commitment isn’t just about stats or legacy—it’s about showing up for his teammates and maximizing opportunities.

Cristobal emphasized the importance of bowl games, saying, “The value of the postseason games… the amount of scouts that attend, the amount of general managers… it provides a great opportunity for guys to really showcase.”

Over the past two weeks, Miami practices have been swarming with NFL scouts.

Cristobal described the game as a chance “to win first and foremost, but to also up their value as it relates to the NFL.”

The focus remains on finishing the season strong, with Cristobal confident in his team.

“We’ve got a good roster intact and expect a lot out of our guys,” he said.

The Hurricanes are ready to roll.
