The 2024 season will largely be remembered as a successful one for the Detroit Lions, boasting 15 wins, a division title, and a playoff bye. While the one-and-done playoff exit stings, most teams would gladly trade for the Lions’ accomplishments this year.
Individually, many Lions players had standout performances, with some even surpassing expectations. However, not everyone lived up to the high standards set for the season. Whether due to injuries, scheme fit, positional adjustments, or opponents catching on, a few players struggled to make the desired impact. Here’s a look at six Lions players who didn’t meet expectations in 2024.
6. TE Sam LaPorta
After a record-breaking rookie season, Sam LaPorta entered 2024 with high expectations. Unfortunately, injuries hindered his sophomore campaign. A hamstring issue during training camp, followed by an ankle injury and a sprained AC joint in his shoulder, disrupted his rhythm.
Despite a stronger finish to the regular season, where he recorded 32 receptions, 341 yards, and four touchdowns in the last six games, LaPorta’s overall numbers (60 catches, 726 yards, seven touchdowns) reflected a “sophomore slump.” While he battled through adversity, injuries and defensive adjustments from opponents made it a challenging year for the tight end.
5. CB Emmanuel Moseley
Signed by the Lions in 2023, Emmanuel Moseley’s tenure has been plagued by injuries. After tearing his ACL twice in consecutive seasons, he was given another chance with a one-year deal in 2024.
Unfortunately, Moseley’s injury troubles continued. A torn pectoral sidelined him until Week 12, followed by a hamstring injury and illness that limited his availability. When healthy, he was relegated to special teams or inactive status.
Given his injury history, expectations for Moseley were tempered, but his lack of contribution left a significant void in the Lions’ secondary. His injury-truncated tenure with the Lions is likely over, closing the chapter on what could have been a much-needed boost for the defense.
