Rio Ferdinand Reveals Luke Shaw’s Potential Replacement at Man United

Luke Shaw managed just 15 appearances for Manchester United during the 2023/24 season, and Rio Ferdinand has shared his thoughts on the club’s future with the defender.

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand believes that Luke Shaw shouldn’t be upset if the club decides to find a replacement for him next season due to his ongoing injury issues.

Shaw has been out of action since February following a muscle injury sustained during United’s 2-1 victory over Luton Town. The 28-year-old attempted to return in time for the FA Cup final against Manchester City but was unable to make it. As a result, Shaw ended the season with just 15 appearances for United.

Despite his lengthy absence from first-team football, Shaw has been included in England’s squad for Euro 2024. He has resumed training and may feature in England’s opening match against Serbia on Sunday, marking his first international appearance of 2024.

Shaw’s injury history is concerning. Over his career at Manchester United, he has suffered 24 different injuries and missed 265 matches since his transfer from Southampton. While Shaw is considered one of the best defenders globally when fit, Ferdinand questions if United and manager Erik ten Hag can continue to rely on his fitness moving forward.

“They’ve got to get a fit Shaw and Lisandro Martinez next season and games out of them both,” Ferdinand stated on his YouTube channel. “I don’t think Shaw could be disgruntled if United said because of his lack of game time over the last course of your time here, we’re going to find another left back.”

Ferdinand added, “I don’t think he could grumble at that. But I think he’s that good when he plays that they will go again [with him].”

Shaw’s potential replacement has been a topic of speculation among fans and pundits alike. The left-back position is critical for United, and the club may look to bolster this area to ensure consistency and reliability in defense.

The club confirmed earlier this week that Erik ten Hag will remain as manager next season. This decision followed a comprehensive end-of-season review conducted by Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Shaw’s inclusion in the England squad has sparked debate about his role in both the national team and Manchester United. His potential comeback at Euro 2024 could influence United’s decision regarding his future at the club.

Manchester United’s left-back options, including emerging talents and potential transfer targets, will be closely monitored as the club aims to strengthen its squad for the upcoming season. Shaw’s performance at the international level could play a significant role in determining his fate at Old Trafford.

Sources such as Transfermarkt highlight Shaw’s extensive injury record, underscoring the challenges he has faced in maintaining consistent fitness. Nonetheless, his skill and contributions when healthy make him a valuable asset, posing a dilemma for United’s management.

As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Shaw’s recovery and potential impact, both for England and Manchester United. The club’s strategy in managing his fitness and exploring alternative options will be crucial in shaping their defensive lineup for future campaigns.
