The Detroit Lions achieved a major goal during their game against the San Francisco 49ers: leaving the field with no significant injuries. Following their 40-34 victory, head coach Dan Campbell provided crucial updates on two key players, Penei Sewell and Alex Anzalone.
Penei Sewell Injury Update
All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell left the game briefly in the first half and didn’t return until the second half after suffering a thumb injury. While he completed the remainder of the game, Campbell confirmed that the injury isn’t expected to have long-term implications.
“No, shouldn’t be (long-term),” Campbell stated. “He should be good.”
It remains uncertain whether Sewell will be available for Sunday’s season finale against the Minnesota Vikings. More clarity is expected once Detroit releases its first injury report on Wednesday.
Alex Anzalone Injury Update
Linebacker Alex Anzalone, sidelined since Week 11 due to a broken forearm, has not resumed practice. However, Campbell indicated that Anzalone is making significant progress and is “really close” to returning.
“We’ll see,” said Campbell. “He’s doing well. He’s close. He’s really close.”
The Lions’ linebacker group has faced substantial challenges with injuries to Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Jalen Reeves-Maybin. While Reeves-Maybin returned to action on Monday, Detroit’s defense continues to feel the strain.
As the Lions prepare for their regular season finale with the No. 1 seed at stake, Anzalone’s potential return could provide a significant boost. Stay tuned for updates as the team heads into a decisive matchup against the Vikings.
