Lions’ 26-Year-Old Targeted by Jets as $9 Million Signing Priority

The New York Jets have several key roster holes to fill this offseason, and one area that deserves their attention is the defensive line. While the focus may be on replacing the star power of Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams, the Jets would be wise to prioritize shoring up their interior defensive front as well.

According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, the Jets should make a concerted effort to sign Detroit Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike once free agency opens. The 26-year-old is projected to command a two-year deal worth just over $9 million, making him an affordable yet impactful target for the Jets.

Onwuzurike, a 2021 second-round pick, had a solid 2024 campaign, appearing in 16 games with 10 starts for the Lions. While he did miss the entire 2022 season due to back surgery, he has shown the potential to be a disruptive force when healthy.

The potential reunion with Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who previously served as the Lions’ defensive coordinator, could be a key factor in luring Onwuzurike to New York. Glenn’s familiarity with the young defensive lineman could help ease the transition and maximize his impact.

With the potential departures of Solomon Thomas and Javon Kinlaw in free agency, the Jets have a clear need to bolster their defensive line. Signing Onwuzurike would not only address this need but also provide the team with a young, promising talent who could develop into a cornerstone of their defensive front.

As the Jets navigate the offseason, shoring up the defensive line should be a top priority. Bringing in a player like Levi Onwuzurike could provide a significant boost to their efforts to build a well-rounded and competitive roster for the 2025 season and beyond.
