Dawn Staley to Face Familiar South Carolina Name in 2026-27 Non-Conference Matchup

Dawn Staley will have a familiar face waiting on the opposite sideline when South Carolina hosts Albany on Dec. 16, as former Gamecocks guard Kelly Morrone returns to Columbia for her first season as the Great Danes’ head coach.

The matchup adds another personal storyline to what is already shaping up to be one of the most demanding non-conference schedules in women’s college basketball. South Carolina has loaded the early portion of the 2026-27 season with marquee opponents, but the Albany game will carry a different kind of weight.

Morrone once wore the garnet and black.

Now, she will be trying to beat it.

A former Gamecock returns to Columbia

Albany officially announced its 2026-27 schedule on Aug. 18, confirming a Dec. 16 trip to South Carolina.

For South Carolina fans who remember the program before Staley’s arrival, Morrone’s name should immediately sound familiar.

She played for the Gamecocks from 1999 through 2004 and became one of the most accomplished perimeter shooters in program history. Morrone was also a three-year captain and helped South Carolina reach consecutive NCAA Tournaments in 2002 and 2003. Her 2002 team advanced all the way to the Elite Eight, the program’s first appearance in that round.

Her numbers remain scattered throughout the South Carolina record book. Morrone ranks third in program history in career three-point percentage, three-pointers made and three-point attempts, according to UAlbany’s official biography.

That makes Dec. 16 more than another December tune-up.

It is a homecoming.

Morrone has built a long coaching résumé

Morrone did not jump directly from the Gamecocks’ backcourt to a Division I head-coaching job. She built her résumé brick by brick.

She began her coaching career at Buffalo in 2005 before moving through assistant positions at Davidson, Rhode Island and William & Mary. In 2013, she became the head coach at John Carroll, where she eventually recorded 117 victories and led the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Her next stop was Merrimack.

Over six seasons, Morrone helped guide the Warriors through the difficult transition from Division II to Division I. She finished her Merrimack tenure with a 74-92 record, but the program showed meaningful progress under her leadership, including back-to-back conference semifinal appearances and a 19-13 record in 2025-26. She was also named 2026 MAAC Coach of the Year.

Albany hired Morrone in April to replace Colleen Mullen.

Now she gets one of the biggest early tests possible: walking into Colonial Life Arena and facing the program where her playing career was forged.

South Carolina’s schedule leaves little room to breathe

The Albany matchup is only one piece of an aggressive non-conference slate.

South Carolina opens the season against Maryland in Paris on Nov. 2 before returning to the United States for a Nov. 8 matchup with North Carolina in Charlotte. The Gamecocks then face USC in Greenville on Nov. 15 and UConn at Mohegan Sun Arena on Nov. 24. Duke awaits in Durham on Dec. 3 as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Gamecocks will also face Oklahoma State on Dec. 6 before hosting Albany on Dec. 16.

That sequence matters.

By the time Morrone’s team walks into Colonial Life Arena, South Carolina will have already faced Maryland, North Carolina, USC, UConn, Duke and Oklahoma State. The Albany game could provide Staley with an opportunity to manage minutes and continue developing her roster while still facing a coach who knows the Gamecocks’ culture from the inside.

Albany will not be treated as an afterthought

South Carolina should enter the matchup as the clear favorite, particularly with the game being played at home.

But Morrone’s Great Danes will not be arriving simply to admire the banners.

Albany’s 2026-27 schedule includes road games against Ole Miss and Rutgers before the December trip to South Carolina. The Great Danes also visit Hofstra on Dec. 12, meaning their matchup with the Gamecocks comes in the middle of a demanding stretch of road basketball.

The game could therefore reveal plenty about both teams.

For South Carolina, it will be another chance to test its depth before SEC play begins.

For Albany, it is an opportunity to measure a developing program against one of the sport’s established powers.

And for Morrone, there will be something more personal every time she looks across the court.

A packed start for Dawn Staley

The Gamecocks’ non-conference schedule is designed to expose them to pressure long before the SEC grind begins.

After the Albany game, South Carolina has Gardner-Webb on Dec. 28 before opening SEC play against Alabama on Dec. 31. The full slate also includes the September exhibition against College of Charleston, giving fans an early glimpse of the roster before the real games begin.

South Carolina’s agreement to participate in the Ally Tipoff also guarantees another high-profile neutral-site matchup with North Carolina in Charlotte, continuing the program’s commitment to challenging non-conference competition.

For Staley, those games are about preparation as much as they are about wins.

For Morrone, Dec. 16 will be something different.

She will walk into the building as Albany’s head coach, but the memories of her South Carolina playing days will still be close. The banners, the court, the garnet-and-black crowd — all of it will be familiar.

Only the sideline will be different.

And when Dawn Staley turns toward the opposite bench, she will see a former Gamecock who once helped build the foundation of South Carolina basketball now trying to challenge the program from the other side.

That makes the Kelly Morrone South Carolina Albany matchup one of the most intriguing personal storylines on the Gamecocks’ 2026-27 non-conference schedule.
