After South Carolina’s defeat to Paige Bueckers and UConn in last season’s national championship, head coach Dawn Staley has outlined her vision for the Gamecocks’ upcoming campaign, which will also proceed without injured player Chloe Kitts.
In their preseason opener, South Carolina dominated Anderson University 112-31, with five players reaching double-digit scoring and every team member contributing at least four points. Joyce Edwards was the standout performer with 27 points.
Despite the lopsided victory, Staley discussed her expectations moving forward during postgame interviews. These remarks came after she recently commented on the current labor discussions between WNBA players—including several former South Carolina athletes—and the league.
“I want to see aggressive play, but also smart decision-making on the court,” Staley explained to media members. “When players like Ta’Niya Latson attract defensive attention, we need to recognize the opportunities that creates for teammates. It’s about reading the game situation better while maintaining confidence in your choices.”
The coach specifically called out guard Tessa Johnson to increase her offensive intensity as the preseason continues and the regular season approaches. Johnson finished with five points on 2-of-7 shooting, including 1-for-5 from three-point range, though she contributed six rebounds.
“I’d like Tessa to attack more on offense,” Staley noted. “Overall, everyone else performed well. If we can replicate our practice intensity in games, we’ll be in good shape.”
The Gamecocks will attempt their championship redemption without Kitts, who suffered a torn right ACL before the season that will sideline her for the entire 2025-26 campaign.
With Kitts unavailable, South Carolina will lean more heavily on Edwards. When asked about Edwards’ potential growth after her summer experience with Team USA, Staley praised the player’s mindset.
“Joyce thrives on challenges,” the coach said. “She has extremely high personal standards. Rather than focusing on Chloe’s absence, we discuss Joyce’s individual development and potential. She’s a star who carries herself accordingly and expects excellence in every performance. I’ve set specific goals for her that I’m keeping private, but she knows what’s expected.”
The Gamecocks’ preseason schedule continues with a matchup against North Carolina on October 30.
